Abstract
Technology innovation is a key contributor to the competitiveness of the firm in the knowledge-based economy. In a fast changing and highly competitive environment, how to make right choices on the target market, innovative concepts, and advanced technologies for commercializing new products and creating the market value is an important issue.This research investigates the observed practices toward technology innovation in the printer industry in Taiwan. The worldwide sales on the color Inkjet Multi-Function Product (MFP) have grown significantly in recent years. The color Inkjet MFP has gradually replaced the traditional single function printer and becomes the mainstream product in the printer industry. However, there are only few Taiwanese companies cultivate the opportunities in this oligopoly market that creates substantial revenue. This study is to explore the different approaches the case firms have taken on technology innovation and value creation for the innovative products from the technology innovation systems point of view.The results of the case study reveal that technology choice, technical capability and entry timing are crucial for gaining the competitive advantage and market value. The key differentiating factors for the firm to first cross the chasm to create major profitable sources for continued business growth are the proper alignments among the adopted technological innovation, core capabilities, and timely cooperation with customer and supplier for expanding and penetrating the new market.
