AbstractThe major attributes of high-tech industry are capital-intensive, technology-intensive, and talent-intensive while its product cycle is extensively shortened. Facing the fierce competition that come with globalization process and ever-changing industrial progress, the high-tech industry endures far greater pressure than traditional industries. Therefore, the utmost challenge for Taiwanese high-tech companies is to gain and to strengthen their industrial capability and competitive edge. Amid Taiwan’s high-tech industries, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and its supportive industries have long been matured along with Taiwan’s worldwide leading position in manufacturing notebook computer and PC monitor. Backed with the fact from considering cost-efficiency and key-component availability, developing LCD industry has most assuredly become the next logical move. In addition, the development of LCD manufacturing technology will without doubt bring along other advancement in electronic products as well, which may cover information, communication and consumer electronics. Through multiple facets of technological development and promotion, the whole industry market would grow rapidly in both size and scale. Therefore, high-tech industry, for instance, LCD industry, exerts profound influence on the aspect of upgrading Taiwan’s industrial capability. It is an important topic to find the strategic position and to establish competitive edge for Taiwan’s LCD industry in global market whilst facing strong competition from Japan and Korea. This study, through collecting and deciphering data from past development, investigates TFT-LCD industry from both global and Taiwan’s perspectives, and from both historical and marketing aspects. Starting from analyzing the competitive TFT-LCD market abroad, then inspecting the core resources from within, we provide the best competitive policy for nowadays Taiwan’s TFT-LCD industry.
