Abstract
Firm survival considerably depends on the capacity of organizations to pursue growth, which in turn is achievable through R&D. The purpose of this paper is to provide the reference material used for developing the R&D center for certain firms in Taiwan. The paper observes two institution technology innovation centers in Taiwan─ Acer and EverTek, and examines the strategic transformation of Samsung’s corporate R&D center (SAIT). It has been found that the R&D centers have to invest more resources, in the early stages, of short-term R&D projects than the basic scientific knowledge reaserch to satisfy the needs of business units. Meanwhile, the developing advanced technologies of the R&D center depends on the strategic alliance with different industries or the key component’s suppliers. In addition, the lack of talented reaserchers is a seriourse challenge for both R&D centers. Finally, the paper discusses the theoretical and practical implications of this study, and offers suggestions for the direction of future research.
