This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, an analytical technique that can measure the concentrations of ozone precursors and MTBE in the ambient is established. Due to the intermingling of industrial areas and metropolis in Kaohsiung, there are multiple and complicated source of ozone precursors. Therefore it is difficult to trace and regulate the source of pollutants. It was observed that major traffic VOCs (ehtene, propene, BTEX) were highly related with MTBE (R2: 0.8232~0.8904) when measured on the roads of Kaohsiung and Hsinchu. MTBE is mainly from the gasoline additive, so the ratio of VOCs to MTBE is a potential traffic reference index, which can identify and estimate the contribution of ozone precursors from traffic source.In the second part, an in-situ simultaneously measuring GC/MS system for VOCs is developed. The monitoring system had been tested at the residential area 100 m south away from the wastewater treatment plant for 11 days. The result showed that while the wind direction was between northwest and northeaster, the concentrations of acetone and toluene were 30.7 and 26.3 ppbv, respectively. During the period of monitoring, a typhoon, Nali encroached upon Taiwan. The monitoring system worked normally still. Some compounds were diluted extremely by rain and wind. The concentration of toluene was 3.0 ppbv and acetone was too low to detect. This shows that the concentrations of polar compounds could be dramatically affected by raindrops comparing to those of non-polar in the atmosphere.
