Abstract
Three nanocomposites of attapulgite, saponite, and layered double hydroxide (LDH) /poly(butylene succinate)(PBS) have been prepared via melt blending. Attapulgite and saponite were modified by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, and LDH was modified by 4-Oxo-but-2-enoic acid undecylamide. The thermal properties, mechanical properties, crystalline perperties and morphology were investigated. The organic intercalation agent lead to the increasing d-spacing of attapulgite, saponite, and LDH form 1.65nm to 3.42nm, 1.32nm to 2.85nm, and 0.79nm to 1.92nm, respectively. Crystalline properties of composites were observed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). The decreased crystalliniy and crystallite size of PBS with the pristine layered inorganic materials were found, while the change of crystallinity and crystallite size in modified system was insignificant due to the increase in miscibility between inorganic material and polymer. The various in the number and size of crystallite had strong effects on impact strength and flexural modulus. The flexural modului of modified layered inorganic materials/PBS nanocomposites were increased, but ones of pristine layered inorganic materials/PBS nanocomposites were decreased then increased. Smaller crystallinity morphology with pristine inorganics can result in a rougher surface than that of modified system. The heat distortion temperature (HDT) of modified nanocomposite can be enhanced comparing with the unmodified system. The heat distortion temperatures of PBS nanocomposites were 95℃(4phr attapulgite) (phr: part per hundred percenrt resin), 94℃(4phr saponite), 95.7℃(4phr LDH), respectively. Modified layered materials processing good dispersion in PBS nanocomposite can result in higher restriction to PBS polymer chain in contrast to pristine inorganic materials. Therefore, the storage modului of modified inorganics materials/PBS nanocomposites were higher than those of pristine PBS and unmodified inorganics/ PBS nanocomposites. Furthermore, comparing to pristine PBS and inmodified inorganics/PBS composites, the modified inorganic materials/PBS nanocomposite showed elevalated Young’s modului which were 729.6 MPa (modified attapulgite), 663.4 MPa (modified saponite), 705.8MPa (modified LDH), respectively.
