Abstract
The study on the anchoring properties of the liquid crystal cells is an important issue not only in the scientific research but also in the LCD technology. POSS (Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsequioxanes)-induced vertical alignment (VA) in the liquid crystal devices was observed. In this thesis, we studied the polar anchoring properties of the liquid crystal cells applied POSS as an alignment layer. Because the cell with POSS as an alignment layer was azimuth-directionless, methods measuring the polar anchoring energy based on directional LC models were not suitable. In the thesis, we prepared several non-rubbed vertical alignment cells and hybrid-aligned nematic (HAN) cells. For the non-rubbed VA cells, we evaluated the polar anchoring energy by the polar anchoring energy effect on threshold voltage and director decay time; meanwhile, we fitted Transmittance-Voltage (TV) curves of the HAN cells with the simulation curves. According to the experimental and simulated results, the polar anchoring energy was 0.00006~0.00009 N/m . It belonged to weak range.
