Abstract
Semiconductor Manufacturing is one of the most important sectors of the high technology industries with products ranging from consumer, computer, communication, automation and defense industry. Every country in the world is taking Semiconductor Manufacturing seriously. Taiwan has already developed its semiconductor manufacturing industry for over 20 year and achieved a very strong foundation. In the 21st century, Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing industry is playing an even more important role in its overall economic development.Forecasting, capital equipment selection, financial investment and accounting practices are all critical for strategic business decision. In fact, they are all equally important for the survival of the semiconductor manufacturing industry. An industry wide survey was conducted among professionals with a minimum of 2-year experience in Semiconductor Manufacturing industry. Out of the 300 questionnaires sent, 98 were returned for this survey. The survey covered four main topics:1. Brand name consideration2. Equipment reliability and product life cycle consideration3. Financial investment consideration4. Risk considerationIn addition, 11 senior executives at or about VP level were interviewed for the same topics. It is hoped that the result of the survey and interview can provide reference for the current and future semiconductor manufacturing industry professionals for their understanding of the characteristics of the capital equipment, the selection process and purchasing strategy.
