Abstract
The Wen-Lin-Yuan Controversy was an urban renewal dispute that happened in Taiwan on March 28, 2012, which has drawn substantial publicity and stirred up discussions among the locals, since then, I considered it as a representation of typical conflicts of private property. However, opinions over this issue focused on public interest rather than private property, therefore, in this thesis, firstly, I inspected the commentaries related to “public interest”, and then cut to the point of private property. Next, I discussed the role of the government, which was controversial and questionable, especially in this case. And based on the studies in the preceding chapters, I then proposed a solution inspired by the notions of the “veil of uncertainty” (Buchanan, 1991) and the “veil of ignorance” (Rawls, 1971) as an attempt to approach the current contention and sketch the ideal form of urban renewal, which may provide an implication of a prospective market for urban renewal in the future.
