Abstract
Head-up display (HUD) shows signals, data or messages on the windshield so that allows the driver to keep their line of sight on the road. It would not only improve the safety of the driver but also reduce reaction time when in an emergency state. This thesis proposes a new architecture of HUD unit, which is highly effective as original equipment that can be installed under dashboard in most of car model because the volume is smaller than current HUD. The fundamental structure consists of three parts. A transmissive TFT-LCD is used as display image source and white light LEDs are used as the backlight of the HUD unit. An illumination optics with special lens profile like lens matrix which can collimate light path to smaller angular distribution and refract the light to specific eyebox area of the driver. This HUD unit can prove full-color image with high resolution and large image size so as to integrate more functions in the HUD unit. A HUD module has been proposed according to abovementioned concept and had been demonstrated. This HUD module can display 7” image size and the thickness of the HUD unit is 80 mm.
