Abstract
In this thesis, we propose a video transmission scheme based on error control and congestion control for three MPEG-4 FGS packetization strategies, namely baseline packetization, binary tree packetization, and optimal packetization. An optimal distribution of source and parity packets is found to minimize the end-to-end distortion for the three different packetization schemes based on the packet loss probability and transmission rate bound estimation in previous time interval. The packet loss probability and throughput estimation is obtained by the congestion control scheme. Here, we use equation-based congestion control for the multimedia transmission due to its smoothing sending rate and well-defined avoidance of congestion collapse.
