Abstract
In the past, high-tech industry in Taiwan made profits from efficiency and rapid response in manufacturing and incremental innovation. In the future, architectural innovation and technology commercialization will be needed to lead in the market.In this paper, we examine the technological innovation and technology commercialization for both the local and foreign cases in medical ultrasound industry from the firm level and industry level points of view. In the case studies, for the prime actors view we discover that some technology commercialization models may to be modified to be suitable for the use in the public sector partnership in Taiwan.Medical ultrasound technology commercialization in Taiwan is based on the results from government supported technology development and transfer from Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). It is important to support the partnership between public sector and private sector to shorten the technology gap between ITRI and company, and to foster closer partnership with private sector.In the study, we find that human resources and intellectual properties are important elements for the technological innovation to combine the core technology with the complementary technology to be effective in the commercialization process. To speed up the technology commercialization, not only the mechanism of technology commercialization and controlling process, but also the powers of market pull and technology push are needed to combine core technology and complementary assets as well as the infrastructure of industry to enhance the formation of the industry cluster.
