Abstract
Magnetic properties and microstructure of CoCr-base perpendicular recording media are discussed in this research. At first, the stoichiometry of CoCrPt alloy is modulated by the additives, Platinum, to study its influence on CoCrPt magnetic properties and microstructure. From experiment results, suitable amount of Platinum can improve the perpendicular anisotropy.Besides, an introduction of a CrMoMn diffusion layer can enhance the Chromium segregation by the annealing process and the magnetic properties are significantly improved. However, the high temperature annealing process is unsuitable for conventional disk manufacturing. In the final part of this research, alternative buffer layers are also discussed. CoCrPt with Ta bufferlayer or Ti bufferlayer has their own unique characteristics. An introduction of Cu seedlayer underneath the CoCrPt/Ti perpendicular media not only promotes coercivity but also enhance the saturation magnetization. This may be due to the fine-grain sizes in the magnetic layer.
