Abstract
Due to the increasing competition in the global market and lack of protection from the government, the pump industries in Taiwan, facing pressure from big companies overseas and the low cost manufacturers from China become hard to survive. How to implement a production system to satisfy customer’s demand which will focus on eliminating wastes, enhancing total quality, and shorten the delivery, thus to stay in pace with today’s competitive world will be a vital topic the pump industry is pressed to know the way to implement. Lean production is a kind of excellent combination of both science of management and manufacturing philosophy. Up to now, it is aggressively pursued and implemented in the developed countries of, such as Japan, Europe and America. There are many related books about lean production theory and method, and the successful cases on the implementation. However, on the respect of implementing lean production successfully, there are various in opinions. That leads the way to implement the lean production in different views. The main theme of this study compiles the related management and techniques from the scholar and the industry expert, and the complementary opinion of this research to summarize a relevant way and steps to implement the System for the pump industry in Taiwan, of which intends to implement. There are eight steps: 1.Education and Leadership 2. Company Assessment of Eight Types of Waste 3.Value Stream Mapping 4.Implementation Plan 5.Pilot Implementation 6.SGIA (Small Group Improvement Activities) Organization 7.Performance Evaluation 8.Company-Wide Transition and Implementation. Therein the research, the highlighted Company Assessment of Eight Types of Waste displays step by step method, the sequence and the forms of the assessment. That can be a reference for those pump industries intend to implement the Lean Production System to locate the root of Eight Types of Waste and the way to tackle the problem. The research is to select a pump company for case study and to verify the implementation method suggested by this research. Having carried out the lean production for over half a year, the case company achieves some improvements in the three areas on operation, management and strategy. There are two types of bench mark: quantified and non-quantified. There is a prospect that the non-quantified output will relatively influence the future a great deal for a long time.
