Abstract
Hunting activities of emperor of Qing dynasty is an issue that the academia has long been concerning. Although related research results are quite abundant, the reason why Qing’s emperor hunted are widely attributed to Manchu tradition by scholars with evidence from historical documents of the Qianlong period. Different from predecessors directly drew materials from Qianlong period and used these materials to cover all royal hunts in Qing dynasty, this thesis aims to explore the motives of hunting materials making in Qianlong period. By analyzing Qianlong emperor’s edicts, compositions, poems, court paintings, and reforming process of hunting institutions, this thesis wants to find out how Qianlong emperor consciously discriminated Han’s hunting ritual (Tianlie Li) from Qing’s culture, transforming Qing’s traditional hunting concepts and rituals into a long-lasting, well-contextualized system of Manchu hunting culture.
