Abstract
With the perspective of nomadic communications and computing, coupling existing asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks with portable devices capable of wireless communications are likely to fulfill the requisites of a multimedia and multi-service nomadic networking environment. Owing to the distinct nature between wireless and wireline networks, combination of ATM networks into wireless communication environment makes the quality-of service (Qos) specifications for virtual channel connections (VCCs) more difficult to meet. In this thesis, we will introduce the distinctive nature of wireless communications, survey current proposed wireless ATM network architectures, and classify the QoS issures. Furthermore, we will discuss thesis issues in a more detailed manner with possible solutions on some specific topics.
