Abstract
This thesis focuses on the formation of Bamboo Grove consciousness. First of all, the essay starts with the beginning of Seven Sages of Bamboo Grove, and concerns about the formation of their reputation, including the timing, location, and reasons of the social background. Secondly, the essay discusses their inner thought and external behavior from the perspective of individual awareness and the symbolic meaning of Bamboo Grove excursion. By analyzing the changing meaning of “Bamboo Grove” in Shishuoxinyu 世說新語, Sijiufu 思舊賦, Zhulinquxianlun 竹林七賢論, and Daoxianlun 道賢論, we can understand the value of this cultural symbol around the world. We also examine how the Bamboo Grove culture symbol was integrated into Yuxin 庾信 and Dufu’s 杜甫 poems, and clarify the changes in different era.At the end of this essay, we summarize the beginning, symbol and evolution of Bamboo Grove consciousness, and try to construct the appearance and dynamic course of it under various era. This thesis is divided into five parts. First, we explain research motives, methods and expected results, and also discuss important researches. Second, we explore the beginning and background of Bamboo Grove consciousness in the Eastern Jin 東晉 Dynasty, including origin of the name and the cause of Seven Sages’ reputation. Thirdly, we analyze the Bamboo Grove symbol through ancient literatures by observing the record of their behavior and how the people valued them. Fourthly, we evaluate the acceptance and transformation of Bamboo Grove consciousness through the usage of their allusions. Last but not least, we generalize the argument and provide other suggestions of the research.
