Abstract
Energy conservation is essential to wireless networks, especially for third generation (3G) systems, because the high-speed data transmission would rapidly exhaust the energy of a mobile station (MS). This paper presents details of energy saving models and session management in two major standards, namely 3GPP and 3GPP2. Furthermore, the analytic comparison of energy consumption in cdma2000 1x EV-DV and WCDMA systems is provided. A novel model of analysis is proposed to evaluate the energy consumption under different traffic models. Energy consumption and reconnection latency during packet datatransmission are therefore quantiTed. Bursty and streaming data trafTc are studied in relevance to consumption efTciency. The analytic model is veriTed through extensive simulation. A Comparative analysis of the performance of energy consumption in cdma2000 and WCDMA is provided. Furthermore, we demonstrate our observation of the impact of the energy saving techniques on the channel holding time of packet data service in WCDMAand cdma2000. Based on this observation, we provide the analysis and modeling of effective channel holding time of high speed packet data service.
