Abstract
Wireless communication including WIFI has become an essential part in modern society. In the meanwhile, multimedia communication is shifting voice dominance into video accompanying when bandwidth gets broader. For the purpose of multimedia communication, many related standards have been defined, such as H.264 (ITU) [1] and MPEG-4 (ISO) [2], etc. Nevertheless, the bandwidth is still insufficient for high quality service. To meet the bit-rate requirement, MPEG4 defines the very low bit rate communication [3], which uses 68 significant facial animation parameters (FAP) to describe facial expression and can achieve real-time transmission even under 1 kbps. However, the data will be seriously ruined in the environment with fluctuating bandwidth and noisy channel. Owing to the significance of the FAPs, a frame may be entirely destroyed even though there are only few errors. It has become an important issue about how to protect these parameters. This thesis focuses on the efficient protection from bursty errors and packet losses at different bit error rates (BER) in the very low bit-rate format defined by MPEG-4.
