Abstract
The relations and activities between magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are discussed in this thesis. In the beginning, we present two homemade optical systems with fundamental frames, measuring modes, automatic programs, and the presentations of basic measurements. After that, two systems are combined effectively for obtaining Kerr signal in surface plasmon resonance condition. It always happens on the surface of bilayer film which is ultrathin ferromagnetic film covered with 45-nm-thick gold. In this thesis, a strong enhancement of longitudinal magnto-optical activity is observed when surface plasmons are excited. The results from experiments present the cobalt thickness dependence and analyzer angle dependence of magneto-optic enhancement, and also put the comparison between NiFe and Co in the aspect of bioapplications.
