Abstract
Many critics agree that the year 1967 is a turning-point for Althusser's theoretical development and orientation: From 1967 onwards, he undertook his "self-criticisms" to rectify and compensate the problems resulting from "the theoreticist deviation" in his early works. But what is interesting is that almost at the same time of the heyday of "theoreticist" works were published, there appeared an article which was never published but circulated in France--"Theory, Theoretical Practice and Theoretical Formation: Ideology and Ideological Struggle." In this article, Althusser had pointed out some initiative response to his later "self-criticisms." My thesis is aimed to analyze this article in detail with comparisons to both Althusser's early and later 1967 works respectively. Through such comp-arisons, I intend to lay bare the internal structuresand "tensions" existing along with his project as "theoretical Anti-humanism" but turning out to fall into the "theoreticist tendency." In the case of ideology, it can be generally observed that through the "self-criticism" Althusser, though not wholly abandoning his original theses, shifts his focus of emphasis on its epistemological functions as the opposite of science in his early works to its social and practical effects in the later ones.
