Abstract
The industrial structure of Taiwan is formed mainly with the small and medium enterprises which have limited internal resources. Innovative competence is critical to help firms to exploit technical opportunity with national innovation system (NIS) among the same environment. Based on NIS theory, we instanced Taiwan’s Plasma Display Panel (PDP) to discuss the national and social resources which firms can use, and how to use them. According to literatures and cases comparison, we induced five kinds of national and social resources firms can apply: technical sources, industrial network, governance technical policy, education system, and financial system.Firstly, from the perspective of technology acquisition, after technology transfer from Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), AU developed technology by itself. CPT’s PDP technology was transferred from Mitsubishi, and FPD’s was transfered from Photonics (U.S.) and FHP (Japan). Secondly, FPD made use of industrial network most aggressively. Thirdly, as the government technology policy in PDP industry is almost invisible, only AU could use it adequately. Besides, in the aspect of education system, AU and NTUEE developed technology mutually, as CPT and FPD both applied academic cooperation program. Finally, AU mostly diversified his funding sources. In last chapter, we will discuss the contribution, management implication and limitation of this article.
