Abstract

Consolidating a variety of IoT devices to compose the application for smart things has been applied in many fields recently, e.g., smart toy, smart museum, etc. Many works discussed about how to build a system to integrate things on network and how to improve some properties, e.g., scalability and latency. However, for real case application, the scale of devices, connection technology, and the location for deployment are very diverse. How to integrate various applications based on one system is an issue. In this thesis, we propose the community-based M2M framework using smart/hetnet gateway. Our approach not only combines the Web of Things approach and the M2M framework, but also enable the community-based deployment of gateways and devices. Each region of a community has a smart gateway equipped with higher computing capacity and storage space for the coordination of a set of het-net gateways and devices. With smart and hetnet gateways, various types of application requirements can be fulfilled and executed at a local region. Accordingly, the network resource usage will be more efficient and the resource occupation on cloud data center is avoidable, especially for the less computing capability of IoT devices. In addition, based on our prototype, we come up with an application scenario that a smart home can automatically switch the lamp with human face detection. The demonstration shows that our system is feasible and supports the subscription and notification in a community as well as the computing and storage belong to community. Finally, we evaluate some system performance on the proposed schemes. The result show that some basic procedure of smart things application benefits from the time and uplink traffic if devices involved in an application are within same region.
