Abstract
Most of the researchers and instructors are tend to employ poetry recitation when it comes to teach the rhythm of poems, but emphasize the role of image and metaphor instead of prosody when teaching poetic composition. This paper aims to return to the intrinsic character of the text, the syllable and the meter, to establish a theory as background to design a practical method of teaching poetic composition. This paper reviews and constructs the core concepts involved, such as the feature of the language of poem, the definition of metrical poem, what is the free verse, etc., and focuses on how to use the syllable (meter), which as the concrete form, to carry the content of sementic meanings and emotions. This paper provides several useful techniques that can be applyied in teaching poetic composition. The feature of the poetic language comes from the utilization of images and the arrangement of the flow of sentences. Metric poem conciously uses the elements of rhyme, rhythms and sections to forge the sense of regularity. The free verse, by contrast, plays the form of sentence, grammer, rhyme and puctuation to extend the flexibility of poetry. In the end of the paper presents the operational process of teaching poetic composition, including the teaching goal, illustration of course design and share the results and introspection of the practice at the front-line.
