Abstract
The speedy and mass development of urbanization had led us to consider the balance between economic development and environmental protection. Many research has indicated that greenways is an excellent mechanism that balanced needs for both conservation and growth. Not only the Local Sustainable Development Planning Guide of Europe Commission emphasized the connection between greenways and green spaces for maintaining the eco-environment and the landscape but also many strategies of the eco-city development regarded greenway planning as one of the important ways to achieve urban sustainable. Although most people believe that the greenway-system planning is one of the strategies to develop a sustainable city, most urban areas are over-developed, no massive undeveloped areas left to create new greenways, which hindered the promotion and practice of urban sustainable development seriously. Under this circumstance, this paper was proposed to redevelop the current inter-city corridor facilities, to create greenways system and to meet the purpose of ecological protection, community segregation, recreation as well as alternative transportation. We established a new assessment structure of planning with GIS technique, location decision theory and spatial multi-criteria evaluation method to delineate the alternative projects of the multipurpose greenways system. The main objective of this paper is to provide an assessable process of multipurpose greenway planning for further research and hope that the results will be referred to the modification of urban land use plan.
