We designed a novel strategy for sensitively detecting the activity of α-2,8-polysialyltransferase (PST) by a combination of ganglioside GD3 functionalized gold nanoparticles and inactive endosialidase. We anticipate that this new method will facilitate the search for PST inhibitors as well as for improved mutant forms of PST in directed evolution experiments. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2013.
