Abstract

A theoretical study of the absolute instabilities in a gyrotron traveling wave amplifier was presented. It was shown that absolute instabilities arise in a variety of ways including overdrive of the operating modes. It was also shown that the distributed losses provide an effective means for the stabilization. The combined configuration was found to allow a rich display of absolute instability behavior.
