The purpose of this study was to determine the potency of various fractions of okra pods extract (VOPE) as antidiabetic based on its effect on reducing fasting blood glucose, cholesterol level, SGOT and SGPT plasm level, also ameliorating damaged hepatocytes in diabetic mice. The antioxidant test was conducted by using 28 male BALB/C mice. The samples were divided into seven groups, namely, KN (normal control), KD (diabetic control), KA (acarbose control), EK (crude extract), NP (non-polar), SP (semi-polar), and EP (polar). VOPE and acarbose suspension administered orally for 14 days in STZ-induced diabetic mice. The diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of multiple low-dose STZ (30 mg/kg body weight) daily for five consecutive days. Before and after STZ injection, fasting blood glucose and cholesterol level was measured. Treatment of VOPE was given for 14 days. On day 15 th mice were sacrificed. Random blood glucose and cholesterol level were measured at 1 st , 7 th , and 14 th day of VOPE treatment. At 15 th day, SGOT and SGPT plasma levels were measured using Pentra C 200 Reader. The liver was collected and processed histologically. The results showed that VOPE administration was able to reduce fasting blood glucose, cholesterol level, SGOT and SGPT plasma level and ameliorate damaged hepatocytes in diabetic mice significantly.
