Two processes of dispersing CuO nanoparticles in n-alkanes by using the dispersant of oleic acid (OA) and sodium oleate (SOA) are compared in this investigation. The adsorption behavior and dispersion ability of OA and SOA are analyzed by estimating the zeta-potential, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and the sedimentation experiments. It is demonstrated that the dispersion process with SOA has more adsorptions of oleate on CuO nanoparticles than OA does, thus the prepared organic suspensions from SOA-modified CuO nanoparticles are much more stable. Moreover, the effects of molecular weight of alkanes on the suspension stability have also been clarified. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
