Abstract

Several efforts have been made to develop ceramics and glasses suitable for implantation. Apatite-containing glass-ceramics are potentially important for this purpose since they exhibit sufficient biocompatibility and mechanical strength to form tight chemical bonds with bones. The crystallization behavior of a glass with a composition of 40 wt% 3CaO·P 2 O 5 -60 wt% CaO·MgO·2SiO 2 was investigated. The primary crystalline phase was apatite with a dendritic form and ellipsoidal shape.
