From the reflection and transmission of light in coupled slabs, we derive the coupling coefficient of modes in coupled waveguides. The present result is found to be similar to that of the conventional coupled-mode theory which requires the evaluation of the overlap integral of modes in each individual waveguide. Our method is simple, especially for analyzing complicated coupled waveguides. © 1999 Publication Board, Japanese Journal of Applied Physics.
