Abstract

A diffusion scheme is suggested for charging or discharging solutes into or from a solid in which the surface transport is controlled in such a way that the maximum shear stress at the surface is maintained constant and below the critical shear stress for dislocation generation. Three simple geometries are treated: slab, cylinder, and sphere. It is shown that such a scheme is the fastest diffusion process without plastic yielding anywhere inside the specimen.
