Effects of boron and carbon on the hydrogenation properties of TiFe and Ti1.1Fe

Abstract

In an attempt to enhance the resistance of TiFe to disintegration during hydrogenation, a small addition of boron or carbon to the alloy was made. The hydrogenation properties of these ternary alloys were studied and compared with those of TiFe. For TiFeB 0.001 , Ti 1.1 FeB 0.001 , TiFeC 0.001 and Ti 1.1 FeC 0.001 alloys, addition of B or carbon induced the formation of Ti and TiFe 2 but did not improve the disintegration resistance. Boron and carbon appeared to suppress the formation of the TiFeH 2 phase. The absorption capacities were drastically reduced. The plateaus became more inclined and the pressures were higher than that of TiFe. The change of hydrogenation properties is explained based on the presence of Ti and TiFe 2 and the interaction between B or carbon and hydrogen in the interstitial sites.
