The graphene layers at carbon nanotube cap regions are efficiently cleaved by several oxidants (e.g., KMnO
4
, OsO
4
and RuO
4
) in acidic solution at 100°C, but not by stronger oxidants, such as K
2
Cr
2
O
7
-H
+
and H
2
O
2
-H
+
.
