Abstract
We report the first spectrally resolved measurements of scanning tunnelling microscope induced fluorescence from monatomic steps. As a function of lateral distance from the step edge, on a sub nanometre scale, increasingly large red (blue) shifts of the emission are observed as the tip approaches the lower (upper) step edge. © Springer-Verlag 2001.
