Abstract
A facile approach to functionalizing inert polymer chains with specific chemical groups under an ozone-treatment process was analyzed. The benzoxazine pendant groups, which perform a ring-opening addition reaction under heat were incorporated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) by the reaction of PVDF-p-benzoquinone (BQ) with formaldehyde and aniline. Spectroscopic examinations and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were carried out to measure the water content angles and the mechanical properties of PVDF-BQ. PVDF-BQ observed in TGA show that the degradation of the grafted BQ groups exhibit a weight loss at 180 °C. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTRI) spectra of PVDF-BQ show an increase in the phenyl group absorption intensity at 1509 cm -1 . The results also show that the crosslinked PVDF-BQ samples are less soluble in a solvent such as 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and are swollen in NMP with a degree of swelling of 87%.
