Abstract

Equally pronounced third- and fifth-order nonlinear optical self-phase modulation effects are found to be simultaneously present in a five-ring diffraction pattern exhibited by an asymmetric cw laser beam traversing a nematic liquid crystal film. The intensity distribution, particularly the asymmetric ratio of the diffraction angle, of the far field pattern is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. © 1990.
