Driven by research in the life sciences, tools that allow for the manipulation of single cells have recently attracted considerable interest because of existing needs in various aspects of biomedical research. Various approaches have been demonstrated in the literature, including using optical tweezers [1], dielectrophoresis (DEP) forces [2], magnetic tweezers [3], [4], and mechanical forces [5]. Recently, techniques to manufacture micronscale fluidic devices have matured, and these devices have begun to displace their traditional, large-scale counterparts in advanced laboratories, especially for chemical and biomedical analysis [6]. © 2009 IEEE.
