Abstract

A two-step process, which includes the formation of B-site compounds, MgTa 2 O 6 , followed by the formation of Ba(Mg 1/3 Ta 2/3 )O 3 , BMT, perovskite by reacting BaCO 3 with MgTa 2 O 6 , has been successfully applied for synthesizing BMT materials. The powders prepared by 2-step process exhibit superior reactivity and result in ceramics with larger Q-factor (Q·f o =600,000 GHz) than the properties obtainable for the materials prepared by the single-step process. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses indicate that the mechanism is the effective suppression on the formation of secondary phase, Ba 5 Ta 4 O 15 .
