Abstract

Lean production Radio frequency identification Value stream mapping Warehouse management Safety Risk Reliability and Quality Management Science and Operations Research
With the push from US military, Wal-Mart and the other industry leaders, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has become one the key technology influencing the industry development all over the world. This research selected a spare part supplier and applied lean production and RFID technology to improve the warehouse operation efficiency. Value stream mapping (VSM) was used to draw current state map (As-Is model) and future state map (To-Be model with lean production and RFID) with material flow, information flow, and time flow. Preliminary experiments showed that the number of pallets and items processed by each operator were increased by 457% and 429%, respectively. The total operation time from As-Is model to To-Be model can be reduced by 36%. Moreover, performance on saving total operation time can be enhanced to 46% with cross docking.
