We have recently reported the anomalous cis-trans isomerization, which induced by 5-photon absorption (5-PA) of a spherical azo-dendrimer (L5AZO) by IR radiation from a nichrom source. In this study, we measured absolute absorption of L5AZO using a calibrated detector in order to investigate these anomalous phenomena. The number of infrared photons absorbed by a L5AZO was estimated as only 10 (photons s ). This result suggests that L5AZO absorbs five photons not simultaneously but sequentially, and suggests the possibility of long-term intramolecular energy storage is anticipated. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
