“Memory effect” is a unique characteristic exclusive to Faradaic Deionization (FDI) systems. It allows electroactive materials to maintain their ion-capturing/ion-delivering state even when the charging/discharging operation is interrupted due to power supply discontinuation. This article elucidates the comprehensive working principle of the “memory effect” using an FDI system as an illustrative example. Furthermore, it outlines several advantages conferred by the memory effect, including the reduction of membrane usage to decrease costs and operational benefits enabling easy switching of water sources without additional contamination. Additionally, potential applications leveraging the memory effect are suggested. By offering a fresh perspective on conventional FDI systems, this article paves the way for enhancing the performance and expanding the applicability of next-generation FDI technologies, potentially establishing them as practical desalination solutions in the future.
