Improving the quality of biodiesel fuel enables its high-ratio blending with petrodiesel and the production of high-blend fuels suitable for light- and heavy-duty diesel-engine vehicles. Herein, we developed the mesoporous carbon plate-supported Pd catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of commercial palm oil–derived biodiesel fuel (palm-BDF) into hydrogenated fatty acid methyl esters (H-FAMEs, premium biodiesel) with high oxidative stability and suitable cold-flow properties. During catalytic hydrogenation, almost all the polyunsaturated FAMEs contained in palm-BDF were rapidly and selectively converted into H-FAMEs, predominantly monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (mono-FAMEs). The high-performing catalyst afforded high-quality H-FAMEs with a mono-FAME content of 40% across a wide range of reaction conditions while demonstrating a high sulfur resistance. In contrast, the commercial and lab-made activated carbon-supported Pd catalysts exhibited lower activities, mono-FAME selectivities, and sulfur resistances, affording fuels with inferior properties. These findings facilitate the design of Pd-based catalysts for producing high-quality stable biofuels and the development of sustainable energy technologies. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
