Photoemission spectroscopy is widely used to investigate metal clusters on inert substrates such as graphite. The influence of the substrates on the spectra is an important issue. We explored this problem by comparing spectra taken on polycrystalline and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Significant differences are observed, and their impact on cluster spectra is discussed. The results are also relevant to the understanding of graphite intercalation. © 1990.
