Abstract
Effect of accumulated amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise on pulse propagation in dispersive single mode fibers is theoretically studied. Large pulse broadening from the effect of ASE noise is found quite detrimental to signal detection. Application to maximum transmission capacity determination of a fiber optic communication system is indicated.
