Subcritical bifurcations and nonlinear balloons in Faraday waves

Abstract

The subcriticality of the Faraday wave instabilities at large wave numbers is demonstrated. Further, the formation of balloon-shaped nonlinear states when the wavelength numbers are outside the tip of the instability region is illustrated. A general argument based on the amplitude equation indicates that this is generic for systems with similar neutral stability curves.
