Abstract
Long Yingzong was a rare Taiwan writer who has lived as a transient nearby Hualian seaport during prewar. He was transferred from April, 1941 to January, 1942 to Bank of Taiwan Hualian branch. He had lived there more than ten months. Because of being at the rear of Taiwan, the inconvenient transportation reduced the opportunity to participate the forum on Taipei literary directly. However, the landscape of Hualian actually becomes significant elements in his works. As an alien to observe the local atmosphere calmly, furthermore, he immersed in his solitude to create the style of Romanticism, which were like the series of Du Nanyuan. Meanwhile, Long Yingzong testified the relationship between the initial modernization and multi-dimensional tribal. Being as a Hakka writer, letting him have the opportunity to observe the appearance to live about new immigration thoroughly. Living in Hualian was not owing to his will, but the new living environment provided him many new materials and inspirations. It stimulated him to meditate the literature essence. After releasing the ”A Small Town Plants Papaya Tree”, led his work to reach maturity. The essay tries to study Long Yingzong the period of life in Hualian, inquire the era of the war, and discuss the relation between the work and geography. How did those stimulate the writer such imaginations? How was the function about the landscape in Hualian? What kind of literature imagination and historical memories left in his works? The essay provides how differently to construct the Taiwan New Literature.
