Abstract

The present invention provides a transverse electric field liquid crystal display device which eliminates the leakage of light and suppresses the disturbance of the electric field between the electrodes, thus enabling an image display of high quality. The liquid crystal display device of the present invention has: a liquid crystal layer LC, which has at least ≥ 2 kinds of color filters FIL(R), FIL(G), etc., varying in colors for color display and the black matrices BM interposed between the respective color filters on one substrate SUB2, is constituted by forming electrode groups PX, CT, CT1, CT2, SD2, etc., for pixel selection on another substrate SUB1 so as to form a liquid crystal composition having dielectric anisotropy held between a pair of the substrates; a liquid crystal panel which is formed by laminating the polarizing plates POL1, POL2 on at least one outer surface of a pair of the substrates; and a drive means which impresses the drive voltage for display to the electrode groups, which is characterized in having spacers SP which bridge a gap defined between opposing inner surfaces of the pair of substrates. The spacers SP are formed by bringing top portions of a protrusion SP1 having a specific resistance of less than 108 Ω.cm which is formed on one substrate SUB2 side and a protrusion SP2 having a specific resistance of not less than 108 Ω.cm which is formed on the other substrate SUB1 side into contact with each other.
