Abstract
Based on the current research project and Social Construction Pedagogy, this research project focuses on three counseling and guidance courses, including counseling theory and practicum, and aims to construct counseling and guidance teaching modules at post-secondary institution. According to the researcher's observation during teaching and research findings, there are three main challenges of applying counseling theories which are developed from western cultural contexts to Taiwanese contexts: 1. language differences between English and Chinese implies cultural gap, 2. the way counseling professional speaks is not close to daily conversation, 3. it takes time to develop and build personal counseling style . The research project utilizes Personal Construct Theory as epistemology and Social Construction Pedagogy as methodology and focuses on students' process of awareness by addressing conversation/ dialogues. The research project aims to enhance students' effectiveness of learning basic theories and skills and propose local counseling and guidance teaching modules within Taiwanese context by conducting this action research. Qualitative research paradigm will be utilized for this study. Specifically, the action research approach will be employed. On the basis of Social Construction Pedagogy , four dimensions "Relationship, Dialogue, Construction, Knowledge" serve the main rationale for the research project. Students' learning experiences will be investigated and function as feedback for the instructor's teaching. Both qualitative and quantitative data will be collected. Focus group interviews will be conducted three times: (a) before the course, (2) at the middle point of the course, and (c) follow-up interview: three months after the completion of the course. Quantitative data will be collected via "The Questionnaire of Self Evolution of Self-awareness", which was developed by the researcher, and will also serve a function in examining students' sensitivity of self-awareness. The implications for counseling and guidance training and teaching, especially teaching modules will be presented.
