Abstract
Gender relations are foundation of our daily social relations. Without incorporating gender equality education into formal education systems, citizens are going to miss opportunities to systematically study and learn about gender that plays such a big role in shaping people’s lives. This study took an undergraduate course on “Introduction to Gender Studies” as an entry point to examine how gender equality education has shaped students’ knowledge and views about the world and themselves and how they would act to respond to such changes. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies were adopted in this study. With students’ approval, during the teaching semester I observed and took notes on their class performances and interactions, and took their required papers as text analysis. Following semester, with students’ voluntary participation, I conducted 17 (12 women and 5 men) quantitative surveys and 15 (10 women and 5 men) in-depth interviews with students from previous class to understand how gender studies education has shaped their knowledge and life. This study found that feminist curriculum is very crucial and helpful for students to learn systemically about how gender inequalities work and what actions are possible to challenge such inequalities. Gender equality education is very important for promoting gender equality in the society.
